Bio

Josh Ison first took up the saxophone at 10 and from the beginning was fortunate to be taught by a multitude of inspiring teachers such as Kevin Flanagan, Martin Kemp and Bert Schilperoort. He grew up in Cambridge where there was a thriving music scene for young players to develop their musicianship and many opportunities to play.  Being severely dyslexic Josh found that music was an outlet in which he could finally thrive and excel for a change, which in turn encouraged him to practise more and more.  He then moved to London to do a degree in jazz performance at Trinity College of music.  While studying there he was influenced and encouraged by many great teachers including Mark Lockheart, Jean Toussaint and Simon Purcell.  Josh has always had a passion for free improvised music with a commitment to create intensity and presence no matter where the music takes him. He has played with many of the worlds most outstanding improvising musicians including Paul Dunmall, Neil Metcalfe and the now sadly departed Tony Marsh. In 2014 He recorded his debut trio album "Perceive React" with jazz bass legend Henry Grimes and the Critically acclaimed Gerald Cleaver on drums . Recent projects include mixed improvised and composed duos with London based saxophonist Alex Merritt and some new collaborations with Pianist Sam Leak. His influences are as diverse as Bach, GyÖrgy Ligeti, Cecil Taylor, Sonny Rollins, Olivier Messiaen, John Adams, Peter Schat, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Albert Ayler, and countless others.
